The Mermaid draws inspiration from the traditional maritime folk ballad of the same name, in which sailors encounter a mermaid combing her hair and holding a mirror—an omen of the danger awaiting them at sea. I was drawn to the contrast between the mermaid’s quiet, almost intimate gesture and the turbulent water surrounding her. Carved by hand in linoleum, the image explores the sea as both beautiful and unknowable, and the ways folk songs have carried our fears, hopes, and stories about the ocean across generations.

Where the Soul Meets the Sea opens October 3. Purchased artwork remains in the exhibition through November 7 unless released earlier with curator approval.
