As I watch with pride the “local shrimpers” leave their docks, I always feel pride….and also slight sadness. The pride is from appreciating their dependable work on sustaining the supply of our fresh fish…….yet the sadness that our shrimpers have dwindled to so few. The previous history of shrimp fisherman here reported many fleets docked here. Sadly, now there are few fish businesses left. Fishing was our largest industry! I am lucky to live here to witness the few and be able to appreciate these hard working people of Southport. As artists we are their storytellers, documenting their presence and significance to our beautiful coastal Southport, while adding a very different story to our history.
