In this cyanotype (a photographic print from a negative using UV light) two silhouetted figures sit completely still on the Southport bench swing. Their focus is directed entirely outward toward the water. This illustrates a quiet, calm moment between a mother and child, where they connect with nature. The dark, solid structure of the wooden swing acts as a grounding anchor framing the soft, fluid, endless horizon of the sea. The shrimp boat returning home represents work, purpose and reliance on the ocean, contrasting with the restfulness of the people on shore. The gentle, repetitive motion implied by a swing matches the rhythmic movement of ocean waves, creating a feeling of peace.
