This is a modified example of the pre Colombian wood firing process mentioned in my bio. It is bisque fired to about 1500 degrees, then a coat of ferric chloride is brushed on the piece. It is wrapped in foil and placed on the ground in an open space. Wood is piled on top to about 6’ and then it is fired. It takes about 3 hours to reduce it to embers. The reaction of the heat with the ferric chloride creates a random pattern of rainbow colors. In places where the foil is tight against the clay, reducing the oxygen to it, the clay carbonizes and turns black. The results are always a surprise. To this piece I added a touch of bronze post firing. The driftwood sourced from my shore walks connects the sea to the ancient firing process and my global wanderings.
